John Q Adams was the 6th president of the United States and the first president who was the son of a president. Prior to his election as president, Adams served in a number of Minister Positions overseas. In 1817 he was elected as president and in his first Annual Message he proposed a national program to unite the sections of the nation through a network of highways and canals. He also urged for the country to pioneer the arts and sciences, with the establishment of a national university, financing of scientific establishments and the construction of an observatory. In the 1828 election, Adams was defeated and returned to Massachusetts, where he served in the House of Representatives until his unfortunate death in 1848.
