The Story

One of the world’s most famous coin types – and crucial to the history of early modern Australia – we are delighted to present an exceptional example of the 18th century King Charles III Spanish-American Silver 8 Reales!

A Spanish coin of huge importance, naturally associated with the Golden Age of Piracy, shipwrecks and buried treasure, the Silver 8 Reales was the most trusted international trade coin in the 17th and 18th centuries. Also known as a Piece of Eight, the Silver 8 Reales was respected and accepted worldwide.

As the Silver 8 Reales circulated around the globe, it naturally found its way to Britain’s southern colonial outpost. Starved of currency, the influx of the 8 Reales was vital to the survival of the colonial economy. Such was the importance of the coin, it was included in Governor Philip Gidley King’s Proclamation of 1800.

Regulating the values of foreign coins circulating in the years after settlement, King’s Proclamation was Australia’s first currency system. The 8 Reales was a leading coin of this landmark enactment, listed at a value of Five Shillings. Soon after, during the governorship of Lachlan Macquarie, the Silver 8 Reales would gain further fame as ‘the Coin of the Holey Dollar’.

The Silver 8 Reales offered here was struck in the Spanish colonial outpost of Peru, in the city of Lima, during the reign of the Spanish ruler, King Charles III. Ruling from 1759 until 1788 – the year of permanent European settlement of Australia – Charles III was arguably the finest European ruler of his generation. Graced with a superb portrait of the iconic Spanish monarch, the single available Spanish-American 1779 Silver 8 Reales we have available is graded Extremely Fine.
