The Story

History you can hold in your hands, we are delighted to present the 1857 Edward Miller Convict Love Token!

Also known as ‘Leaden Hearts’, Convict Love Tokens provide a powerful link with those who fell foul of the harsh British legal system in the 18th & 19th centuries. Made for many British and Irish convicts whilst awaiting transportation to Australia, thousands of miles away from their families and friends, Convict Love Tokens were largely created from English coins. Smoothed flat and inscribed with a special message, illustration or popular phrase of the day, tokens were then left with loved ones as a keepsake.

Very rare and utterly unique, each Convict Love Token has its own tale to tell – such as the 1857 Edward Miller Convict Love Token before you! An absolutely brilliant work of ‘convict art’, this superbly engraved example was made from a smoothed 1797 Cartwheel Penny, with the reverse inscribed for ‘Edward Miller February 1833 Aged 24 1857’. On the obverse, one finds the portrait of King George III, and the name ‘George Bevan’, who we believe to be the artist who engraved the piece.

Offered in exquisite Extremely Fine condition – and very rare in such a magnificent state of preservation – this spellbinding colonial artefact is a must-have for collector and Australian history buff alike. Click add to cart now!
