The Story

A genuine artefact of Australia’s post-WWII reconstruction period, and a key piece of Australian currency history, we are delighted to present the King George VI 1951PL Circulated 4-Coin Set. Struck at the Royal Mint in London, the coins in this set are unique – they are the ONLY Australian issues to carry the Royal Mint’s PL mintmark!

The Second World War had a major impact on Australian life. The threat from Japan triggered a ‘populate or perish’ mantra, and immigration was given top priority in the postwar years. Indeed, more than two million people immigrated in the first 20 years after the conflict, and the nation experienced a major postwar boom – a boom that naturally required a significant increase in the amount of circulating currency.

Just as we turned to the USA for help with currency production during the Second World War, Australia recruited Britain’s Royal Mint to assist the minting of coins in 1951. The penultimate coinage issue of the reign of King George VI, the Royal Mint struck Australian halfpennies, pennies, threepences & sixpences in 1951.

Denoting that they had indeed been struck in London, these coins all carry a PL mintmark – a mintmark first used by the Romans while occupying Britain in Ancient times. PL either stood for Pecunia Londinii (‘Money of London’) or Percussa Londinio (‘Struck in London’). As the 1951 coins presented here are the only Australian coins to feature the PL mintmark, they are utterly unique in Australia’s 1910-64 predecimal series!

A key element of every Australian collection, under any circumstances, the 1951PL 4-Coin Set is simply a must-have at this price. Offered in Circulated condition, the set of four can be yours for a crazy $12! Click add to cart now!
