Australia’s most desirable coin, rare in any grade, we have the iconic 1930 Penny in much-better-than-usually-seen Very Fine condition! Among the finest we have offered, secure this superb example and get a FREE 1911-64 Penny Set!
The 1930 Penny was born of the Great Depression. As a result of the economic downturn, demand for new coinage in Australia fell dramatically, with the Melbourne Mint largely idle during this period. There were no threepences or sixpences struck from 1929 to 1932, for example, and there were no pennies struck in 1930 – or so it was thought. It is now accepted that perhaps 3,000 pennies were produced in 1930, in the process of testing coin dies. It is thought that these coins were stored away, and ultimately released into circulation with the 1931 or 1932 Penny issue.
As it was issued for general circulation, it is to be expected that this iconic Australian rarity is seldom seen in anything other than well-worn condition. Indeed, most of the 1,500 known examples grade at Fine or lower. The coin presented here is one of very few exceptions to the rule.
With the obverse portrait of King George V distinguished by six clear pearls and a partial centre diamond, this particular example of the 1930 Penny is in much-better-than-usually-seen Very Fine condition. Among the finest of the few, this coin is likely to be in the top 5% of surviving examples. The opportunity to own the 1930 Penny in this outstanding state of preservation naturally emerges only very occasionally.
As a bonus, secure this great Australian rarity in premium grade and we’ll throw in a FREE 1911-64 Penny Set! All but complete, with only three 1919/20 Penny Dot types, 1933/32 Penny Overdate and 1930 Penny absent, this historic Australian coin set comprises 74 different dates and mintmarks!
