Replacing Australia’s original currency system of pounds, shillings and pence, the introduction of decimal currency in 1966 represents the most important landmark in the nation’s currency heritage. In 2006, the Royal Australian Mint honoured the 40th anniversary of decimalisation with the annual Mint Set – and what a set it is!
The perfect way to honour this major milestone, the 2006 Mint Set saw the shock return of the iconic 1c & 2c coins! The first 8-coin Mint Set since the 1c & 2c had been withdrawn from circulation, this inspired concept was a major shock to the collector community, and naturally provoked barnstorming demand. That initial demand has translated into substantial long-term demand, as the 2006 1c & 2c represent the first of only two occasions when Uncirculated 1c & 2c dates featured the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
Struck to the Royal Australian Mint’s rigorous Uncirculated standard – a much higher standard than that used to strike the coins found in change – the 1c & 2c are united the 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 & $2 coins.
