One of the first banknotes issued into circulation at Decimal Changeover, we are delighted to present the First Prefix issue of Australia’s first $20 note!
Arguably the greatest milestone in our currency history, decimalisation took place in February 1966. Alongside the six coinage denominations, four banknotes were unveiled – the Coombs/Wilson $1, $2, $10 & $20. The first $20 notes carried the prefix XAA. Naturally popular as the ‘first of its kind’, the 1966 $20 Coombs/Wilson XAA First Prefix issue is also sought after for its rarity in superior quality.
Because interest in First Prefix issues is a relatively recent phenomenon, and with the high denomination $20 representing too much spending power, the 1966 $20 Coombs/Wilson XAA First Prefix was rarely set aside at the time of issue. As a result, they are scarce in the upper echelons of quality.
